As a part of a large public research university, the mission of the Department of Biology is to combine internationally-recognized research programs with a commitment to the very best in undergraduate and graduate education. Biology at Temple University is broadly-based, with faculty interested in biological problems at the molecular, cellular, organismal, population, and species levels. Our faculty is comprised of esteemed scientists who share a commitment to quality instruction and research. Our research encompasses studies that relate to the complex interactions in biological systems: from the molecular pathways within single cells to the study of organisms in ecosystems.
We seek to inspire the next generation of creative biologists who will investigate fundamental biological processes and mechanisms, and their impact on health, the environment and society. Our department strives to offer our students a rich educational experience that encompasses the theoretical, quantitative, and applied aspects of the biological sciences. We provide students with intensive practical laboratory and field experiences as well as advanced elective options that prepare them to successfully enter the workforce or pursue advanced degrees. The department also prides itself in training a high proportion of minority and first-generation college students.
